How to Become a Good Multimedia Journalist?

If you are planning on becoming a multimedia journalist or are planning to be a better one, it is imperative that you understand what exactly multimedia journalism is. Most of the time, when someone says multimedia we think of videos but this is not the only aspect of multimedia journalism. It is actually the process of combining text, images, audio, and video to get a story across to the public. Now that you know what multimedia journalism is, let’s take a look at how you can be a good multimedia journalist.

Improve Organisation Skills

Being a journalist is very much different from the other standards professions. You will so many things to do at the same time and all of them will be time-consuming tasks and you cannot compromise accuracy.

Therefore, you should first figure out how to prioritize the tasks so that you will be able to meet all the deadlines and the information you provide are accurate. You also need to be orderly in storing your documents, etc. so that you do not have to spend hours looking for an important document, photo, video or audio clip, etc.

Interpersonal Skills Matter

If you are a journalist, you will be interacting with all sorts of people throughout the day and you should be able to get the necessary information from even the most difficult person without harassing them. Thus, you need to improve your people skills!

You also need to be properly groomed and dressed appropriately for the occasion as people are more likely to trust a properly groomed gentlemen or a lady than someone who appears far too casual to trust with the information they have.

Personal skills also mean that you can judge the accuracy of the information given by a person based on his/her body language so that you will not get into trouble for publishing erroneous or scandalous content that amounts to defamation.

Always keep in mind that defamation is a serious issue nowadays and can result in costly lawsuits.

Get Your Hands on Proper Equipment

If you want to be good at what you do, you need the proper gear. The most important items for a journalist are laptops, audio recorders, good quality cameras such as Nikon cameras, additional memory such as an external hard drive and additional memory cards.

The equipment should be properly maintained and checked before you go out there to cover the story. You cannot have an equipment failure on the site as information is time sensitive and someone else will beat you to it.

You have to backup your data and store it in a safe place. You also need to store the information of your contacts and sources in backup media so that you will still have access to them even if something happens to your laptop, etc.

Never Stop Learning

Your job is dependent on your skills, mainly writing skills but you also need to improve your computer skills, editing skills, and photography skills. You need to learn about the new styles as well as new equipment that would make your life easier. You should be willing to learn the new software that you may need or are asked to master by the agency you are working for.

More importantly, you should be knowledgeable about the field you are interviewing your subjects about and, therefore, if you want to be a good journalist, you can never stop learning and the things you learn may spread to any field of knowledge known to man.

Keep On Writing

If you stop, you will lose your knack! Therefore, keep on writing even after you achieve all your goals and become the best multimedia journalist ever.
